Lady Pioneers Hang on to defeat Lady Dolphins
Spartanburg, SC - Despite a slow start, the Lady Pioneers on Sunday defeated Brunswick CC 87-72.
Most of the first half was a two point game, but the SMC pulled away for a 37-29 halftime lead.
Kierra Phillips (Gaffney HS) led the way with 13 points, nine points in the first half.
The Lady Dolphins played hard and cut the second half lead to 64-60 with six minutes to play. SMC went on a 7-1 run to extend the lead back to 10.
Playing with only six players, due to injuires and the flu, Brunswick battled strong until the four-minute mark when their second player fouled out leaving four to play.
The Lady Pioneers (15-10, 5-0 Region X) took advantage and outscored Brunswick 14-6 to hang on for the win.
Ashia Mitchell (Dorman HS) scored 13 and Shaniqua Whitley (Keenan HS) chipped in 12.
The Lady Pioneers host Clinton Junior College Thursday at 6 pm
Spartanburg Methodist College has 14 intercollegiate teams that compete in Region X of the National Junior College Athletic Association, which includes colleges in the Carolinas, Virginia, and West Virginia.
The College is in its 100th academic year of providing a quality education to students in a Christian environment. More than 90 percent of SMC graduates continue their education at other institutions of higher learning.
