SMC Falls to Voorhees, 63-56

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Spartanburg Methodist College women's basketball team dropped a 63-56 decision to Voorhees on Senior Night on Thursday.

The Pioneers (10-15), who honored Emiya Gallman in pre-game festivities, were led by Najah Gilliam and Krystal Johnson, who had 13 and 10 points, respectively.

The Tigers (13-14) shot 53.3% in the final 20 minutes and erased a 10-point deficit in the win. Nedsha Ford led Voorhees with a game-high 28 points on 10 of 23 shooting from the field and 7 of 10 from the free-throw line. She was joined in double figures by Inga Colclough, who had 14.

SMC ended the first two quarters with 3 pointers by Gilliam in the first and Latavius Wilson on its way to a 28-22 halftime lead. Zy Bell put SMC ahead by 10, 34-24 with 7:28 left in the third quarter.

Voorhees came back with a 12-1 run to take its first lead of the game when Alyssa Herder made a turn-around layup for a 36-35 advantage for the Tigers. Six of the 12 points in the run came from Ford, who had 20 of her 28 in the final 20 minutes.

Despite the loss, SMC will have one more home game on Saturday at 2 p.m. when they host Life University. The Pioneers also found out on Wednesday that they had secured a spot in the upcoming Continental Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament, Feb. 27 thru Mar. 2 on the campus of Haskell Indian Nations in Lawrence, Kansas.
