SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Fueled by an energetic home crowd, the Spartanburg Methodist College women's basketball team defeated Voorhees, 82-60, on Wednesday night.
The contagious enthusiasm of the fans carried onto the court as four Pioneers scored in double figures, lifting SMC to a perfect 4-0 start to the 2025-26 season. Halle Traylor and Najah Gilliam led the way with 17 points apiece, while Kamya Hatten added 13 and Destiny Middleton chipped in 12.
SMC shot a blistering 60.4% (29-for-48) from the field, with eight different Pioneers scoring and 11 seeing action in the victory.
Voorhees (1-1) committed 22 turnovers in the loss. Shykiera Brown led the Tigers with 18 points, while Anaze Ravenel added 12.
A brief 4-3 lead by the visitors was quickly erased when Traylor sank a pair of free throws and Zy Bell followed with a steal and layup to put the Pioneers ahead for good. Later in the opening quarter, a three-point play by Hatten pushed SMC's lead into double digits, where it remained the rest of the way. The Pioneers closed the first quarter on an 8-0 run to take a commanding 26-11 lead en route to the win.
Next, SMC continues its five-game homestand with a rematch against Georgia Gwinnett on Saturday at 6 p.m. at Bridges Arena.
