SPARTANBURG, SC – In its final home game of the season, all four senior members of the Spartanburg Methodist College women's basketball team made key contributions in an 85-79 win over Carolina University on Saturday afternoon.
The Pioneers (15-13) placed four players in double figures: Destiny Middleton (21 points), Halle Traylor (19), Najah Gilliam (17), and Krystal Johnson (17). Middleton, Traylor, Gilliam, and Zy Bell were recognized in pregame Senior Day festivities.
Bell impacted the game defensively with four steals while adding five points and five rebounds. Johnson narrowly missed a double-double with nine rebounds, and Traylor dished out five assists in the victory.
Carolina (7-18) was led by a double-double from Dearia Page, who totaled 23 points and 15 rebounds to go along with seven assists. Four Bruins scored in double figures, as Tynilla Simpkins and Angelina Jordan each finished with 11 points and Mya Smith added 10. Jakyiiah Williams contributed nine points and six assists.
SMC led from start to finish and forced 22 Carolina turnovers. The Pioneers knocked down 10 three-pointers, with Gilliam hitting four and Traylor and Middleton adding three each.
The Pioneers now await their opening-round matchup in the upcoming Appalachian Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament.
