SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Spartanburg Methodist College women's basketball team dropped a 76-67 decision to Clinton College on Thursday evening.
The Pioneers (8-14) were led by JaiDah Liebert, who had 27 – 18 of which came in the final 20 minutes.
The Golden Bears (16-3) were able to put four in double figures in the win. Tameah Gaddis led Clinton with 18 points. Diamond Moore-Heath added 15, Kourtney English had a double double with 13 points and 12 rebounds an dJabrica Leslie had 10 points.
A jumper by English put Clinton ahead 8-7 with 4:32 left in the opening quarter. The Golden Bears ended the opening 10 minutes, nine of the final 12 points to take control of the contest. Clinton stretched the lead to as much as 23 in the third quarter.
Despite the large deficit, there was no quitting on the SMC sideline. The Pioneers rallied to make it a seven-point game, 66-59, when Liebert hit a 3-pointer with 4:29 to play. The Golden Bears came back with an 8-2 spurt to spoil the comeback hopes for the Pioneers.
Next, SMC will travel to Charlotte for a rematch against Johnson & Wales (NC) at 1 p.m. The Pioneers won the earlier meeting in Spartanburg on January 29, 72-71.
