Volleyball Opens Season, Goes 1-4 In Wallace State Tournament
HANCEVILLE, ALABAMA -- The SMC Lady Pioneers volleyball team
went 1-4 for the weekend to open their season on the road in the
Wallace State College (at Hanceville) Tournament.
The Lady Pioneers lost matches on Saturday to Snead Community
College (20-25, 23-25, 22-25), Faulkner Community College
(13-25, 22-25, 19-25), and Southern Union Community College
(20-25, 9-25, 24-26).
SMC's only win for the weekend came in a four-match set (25-18,
23-25, 25-19, 25-23) Friday after over Lawson Community
College.
SMC lost an early Friday afternoon set 25-14, 25-11, and 25-11
against Wallace State.
The Lady Pioneers will scrimmage on the road Tuesday at 6:30 pm
against Columbia College. SMC hosts the 2010 Pioneer Classic next
Friday, Sept. 3 through Sunday, Sept. 5.
As the only Division I NJCAA team this year in Region X, SMC will
primarily be competing against teams in Region 8 (Florida) and
Region 22 (Alabama). SMC will need to compete in and win the Region
22 tournament in order to advance to nationals this year. The Lady
Pioneers have made appearances in the national tournament for the
last three years as the Region X champion.
Spartanburg Methodist College has 14 intercollegiate teams that
compete in Region X of the National Junior College Athletic
Association, which includes colleges in the Carolinas, Virginia and
West Virginia.
The College enters its 100th academic year of providing quality
education to students in a Christian environment this August. More
than 90 percent of SMC graduates continue their education at other
institutions of higher learning.
