Pioneers Post Pair Of Wins Over New River
Spartanburg, SC – The Spartanburg Methodist College Pioneers baseball team started a weekend series against New River Community College on Saturday with a pair of wins in an afternoon doubleheader.
The Pioneers used a strong pitching performance by Corey Rhoney to win the first game of a the series, 3-0. Rhoney (6-0) pitched a complete game two-hit shutout, with five strikeouts, to record the win.
Marty Gantt went 1-for-3, with one run and one RBI to pace the Pioneers offense.
In game two, the Pioneers exploded for nine runs in the first inning to take a 13-0, five-inning win.
Freshman Ricky Moses led the Pioneers' attack going 2-for-2, with three RBIs and three runs. Reggie Weatherford, 2-for-4 and Nick Ferguson, 1-for-1, each tripled and scored two runs.
Sophomore starter John Long (2-1) struck out five to get the win.
Spartanburg Methodist College has 14 intercollegiate teams that compete in Region X of the National Junior College Athletic Association, which includes colleges in the Carolinas, Virginia, and West Virginia. The College is in its 99th year of providing quality education to students in a Christian environment. More than 90 percent of SMC graduates continue their education at other institutions of higher learning.
