SMC Holds On To Win Region Opener
BURLINGTON, NC- Top-seeded Spartanburg Methodist barely survived
its first-round game late Wednesday night in the Region X baseball
tournament in Burlington, N.C.
The Pioneers had a 6-0 lead after six innings behind starter Josh Adams but No. 8 seed Guilford Tech scored six runs against relief
pitchers in the ninth and had the potential tying run at second
base in an 8-7 final at the Burlington Athletic Stadium.
SMC (44-8) advanced to play 7 p.m. Thursday against No. 5 USC
Sumter, which knocked off No. 4 USC Lancaster, 9-1, in eight
innings. In other tournament action No. 3 Louisburg was shut out,
4-0, by No. 6 Florence-Darlington Tech and No. 2 Pitt crushed No. 7
Surry, 13-3, in six innings.
Earlier Tuesday night, Coach Tim Wallace was chosen Region X Coach
of the Year and six Pioneers were named the 2010 All-Region First
Team - infielders Rob Harding and Sloan Gilliam, outfielder Marty Gantt, pitchers Corey Rhoney and Kyle Owings (Reliever of the
Year), and designated hitter Tyler Jackson.
In the latest NJCAA Division I Baseball poll SMC moved up to No. 6.
Region 10 member Pitt CC dropped to No. 14.
Spartanburg Methodist College has 14 intercollegiate teams that
compete in Region X of the National Junior College Athletic
Association, which includes colleges in the Carolinas, Virginia,
and West Virginia. The College is in its 99th year of providing
quality education to students in a Christian environment.
More than 90 percent of SMC graduates continue their education at
other institutions of higher learning.
