SMC Sweeps Surry in Weekend Series
SPARTANBURG, SC – The SMC Pioneers completed a four-game series sweep Sunday afternoon against the Surry Community College Knights in dramatic fashion and on a rain-soaked field.
In game one, Cody McElhaney drove in Marty Gantt in the bottom of the 10th for a 2-1 Pioneer win. Kyle Owings (2-1) got the win, while McElhaney went 2-for-5 and Reggie Weatherford went 3-for-4 for the Pioneers.
In game two, the Pioneers jumped out to a four-run lead, only to see Surry climb back into the game with four runs in the top of the 4th inning.
Surry led the game going into the bottom of the 7th when Gantt led off the inning with a walk and was moved over to third on a sacrifice bunt by Rob Dearing. Gantt scored on a sacrifice fly to tie the game 5-5.
With two outs and Sloan Gilliam on first, McElhaney drove a 0-1 count over the left field wall for a walk off two-run homerun to secure the four-game series sweep for the Pioneers, 7-5.
Ben Carlson (2-1) got the win and Gilliam went 1-for-3 with two RBIs; McElhaney went 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
The Pioneers currently are riding a 14-game winning streak and improve to 20-6 overall and 12- 4 in Region 10.
