Pioneers Post Pair of Wins Over Surry CC
SPARTANBURG, SC – Riding a 10-game winning streak, the SMC Pioneers opened up a weekend series against Surry Community College on Saturday with a pair of wins.
The Pioneers opened up the first game by spotting Surry four runs in the top of the first inning, but fought their way back to take a 7-5 win.
Josh Adams (4-1) started the game and got the win as the Pioneer pitching staff only gave up three hits. Closer Kyle Owings came into the game to record his sixth save of the year. Rob Harding and Sloan Gilliam, both 2-for-3 for the game, led the way offensively.
In game two, the Pioneers scored three runs in the second and three runs in the third en-route to a 10-2 victory.
Corey Rhoney (5-0) continued to dominate on the mound, and picked up his fifth win of the season.
Sloan Gilliam, who went 3-for-4, and Reggie Weatherford, who went 2-for-2 with 3 RBIs, paced the 13-hit offensive attack as the Pioneers increased their winning streak to 12.
The Pioneers (18-6, 10-4) are set to play Sunday afternoon at Mooneyham Field to close out series with Surry CC.
