Pioneers Up to 31 Wins in a Row
SPARTANBURG, SC - The SMC Pioneers battled to extend their winning streak on Saturday, tacking two more onto that with a pair of wins over Pitt Community College.
SMC came out on top in game one with an eight-inning, 7-6 win.
Sophomore Kyle Owings pitched the win, going 3-1 on the season.
Sloan Gilliam went 3-fo-5, with two base hits, a double and a RBI. Rob Harding went 3-for-4, also with a double and an RBI.
Luke Tollison also posted a hit and an RBI for the Pioneers, while Reggie Weatherford went 1-for-2 with a hit and a double.
Game two proved another tight battle, with the Pioneers claiming a 13-11 win.
Freshman pitcher Zack Godley got the win, and went 4-0 on the season.
Gilliam went 2-for-3 with an RBI; while Travis Burnside went 2-for-3 with a double.
Weatherford went 1-for-3 with a double and three RBIs, while Jake Koenig nailed a homerun and went 1-for-4.
The Pioneers have now won 31 games in a row.
SMC takes on Pitt in another doubleheader tomorrow at 1 pm at Mooneyham Field.
Spartanburg Methodist College has 14 intercollegiate teams that compete in Region X of the National Junior College Athletic Association, which includes colleges in the Carolinas, Virginia, and West Virginia. The College is in its 99th year of providing quality education to students in a Christian environment. More than 90 percent of SMC graduates continue their education at other institutions of higher learning.
