Baseball Extends Winning Streak to 18
Spartanburg, SC- The Spartanburg Methodist College Pioneers baseball team topped off a 16-game winning streak with another two wins on Sunday against New River Community College, despite an early start time with a forecast for rain.
In game one, the Pioneers scored seven runs in the first for a 17-1 win. Sophomore Anthony McNutt (3-1) pitched four innings of two-hit baseball to get the win.
Luke Tollison and Nick Ferguson led the Pioneer offensive attack, going 3-for-4, three runs, two RBIs; and 2-for-3, one homerun and five RBIs, respectively.
In game two, the Pioneers' Chris Cox pitched a five-inning no-hitter in the 10-0 win. Cox (2-0) struck out five and allowed only two batters to reach base on walks.
Sloan Gilliam went 2-for-3 and led the Pioneers with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored. O.B. Johnson, 2-for-3, contributed with a triple and double.
SMC extended its winning streak to 18 wins and are 26-6 for the season. The Pioneers host Catawba Valley CC Wednesday at Mooneyham Field for a single game 2 pm start.
Spartanburg Methodist College has 14 intercollegiate teams that compete in Region X of the National Junior College Athletic Association, which includes colleges in the Carolinas, Virginia, and West Virginia. The College is in its 99th year of providing quality education to students in a Christian environment. More than 90 percent of SMC graduates continue their education at other institutions of higher learning.
