Reinhardt Uses Late Surge to Top Pioneers in Extras
SPARTANBURG, SC – A seven-run 10th inning by visiting Reinhardt broke a 3-3 tie on its way to a 10-4 extra-inning win over Spartanburg Methodist College on Thursday.
SMC (4-5, 0-1 AAC) erased an early 2-1 deficit in the sixth inning to take a 3-2 lead. The rally was fueled by an RBI single from Elijah Franz followed by an RBI double by Tanner Martin. Blake Exizian and Martin were offensive bright spots for the Pioneers, each finishing the day with three hits.
Reinhardt (4-9, 1-3 AAC) managed to tie the game at three apiece in the 7th. Both pitching staffs then locked in, keeping the game scoreless through the 8th and 9th innings to force extra frames.
The visitors finished with 13 hits—five of them coming during the decisive 10th inning. Leading the charge for Reinhardt was Sam Holthaus, who went 2-for-6 with 4 RBI, including a bases-clearing double in the 10th. Cannon Dorsey added a 3-for-5 performance with three RBI, while Ryan Stephens went 2-for-5 with two RBI.
Earlier in the contest, Exizian put the Pioneers on the board in the bottom of the first for an early 1-0 lead before the Eagles responded with two runs in the top of the second. After Reinhardt tied the game in the seventh, SMC had opportunities to end it in regulation but stranded a base runner in the seventh and two more across the eighth and ninth innings.
In the 10th, the visitors loaded the bases against SMC reliever JC Murphy. Following a bunt single that kept the pressure on, the Eagles' bats broke the game open to secure the victory.
