Pioneers' Winning Streak Snapped In Sunday Split Against Pitt
SPARTANBURG, SC -- The SMC Pioneers ended a 30-plus game winning
streak Sunday with an afternoon split against Pitt Community
College.
SMC opened game one with sophomore John Long on the mound, who
pitched a complete game and allowed only four hits, to get the 5-1
win.
The Pioneers played four scoreless innings, until Reggie Weatherford nailed a solo homerun. Weatherford went 1-for-2 for the
game.
Jake Koenig, Marty Gantt and Rob Harding each added homeruns of
their own. Zach Singleton brought in Travis Burnside, who tripled
on two outs in the sixth inning.
That win put the Pioneers winning streak at 32 - which
abruptly ended with a six inning, 19-8 loss in game two.
Gantt, Koenig, and Long each went 2-for-3 in game two; Gantt got
two RBIs, while Koenig and Long each got one RBI.
Freshman Travis Burnside went 2-for-4, as did Reggie Weatherford,
who also posted an RBI.
Sloan Gilliam went 1-for-4; OB Johnson and Tyler Jackson each went
1-for-1, with Jackson posting three RBIs.
The Pioneers (23-5, 38-7) are only one game away from clinching the
No. 1 seed for the Region X tournament, to be held May 5-9 in
Burlington, NC.
SMC next plays USC Lancaster, in Lancaster, on Wednesday, April 21,
at 5 pm
Spartanburg Methodist College has 14 intercollegiate teams that
compete in Region X of the National Junior College Athletic
Association, which includes colleges in the Carolinas, Virginia,
and West Virginia. The College is in its 99th year of providing
quality education to students in a Christian environment.
More than 90 percent of SMC graduates continue their education at
other institutions of higher learning.
