No. 8 Pioneers Sweep Series with USC Salkehatchie
SPARTANBURG, SC – The SMC Pioneers closed off the weekend at home with a sweep of USC Salkehatchie on Saturday.
In game one, the Pioneers found themselves down by five runs in the bottom of the third inning, after the USC Salkehatchie Indians hit three home runs off of SMC starter John Long.
But the Pioneers answered with seven runs of their own to take a 7-5 lead after three innings. Cody McElhaney delivered the major blow for the Pioneers with a grand-slam homerun.
John Long went 2-for 2 with two homeruns, four RBIs and threw a complete game to record his third win of the year.
The Pioneers scored four more runs to take the first game 11-7.
In game two, the Pioneers broke out on top with five runs in the first inning and four runs in the second inning to defeat USC Salkehatchie 11-2 and sweep the series.
Tyler Jackson went 3-for-3, with three RBIs and two runs as the Pioneers pounded out 11 hits.
Josh Wilson entered the game in the second inning and picked up his second win of the year.
The No. 8 Pioneers, 16-4 Region and 31-6 overall , will be traveling to Florence, SC to play a four-game series with Florence Darlington Tech on April 10 and 11.
