Down 6-0 in game one of the doubleheader, Spartanburg Methodist College scored seven runs on six hits to rally for a 7-6 victory. The second game of the doubleheader saw the Pioneers withstand a late rally by Bluefield for an 8-7 to complete a doubleheader and weekend sweep for the visitors.
SMC (16-13, 9-6) pounded out 16 hits in the first game of the day. Matt Smith and Elijah Franz and Thatcher Baughman each had three hits and Blake Exizian added two. Franz delivered a three-RBI triple for what proved to be the difference in the big seventh inning.
Game two saw the Pioneers rack up 10 more hits as Smith, Franz, Tanner Martin and Bryce Satterwhite each record two hits in the win. Dario Astudillo and Satterwhite each drove in a pair for the winning efforts. In the seven inning contest, reliever Peyton Gardner pitched 5.2 innings of relief for the win. With the tying run at second and the winning run on first, Nicky White closed out the win with a strikeout.
Next, SMC will take to the road to face Tennessee Wesleyan on Tuesday at 3 p.m. in Athens, Tennessee.
