GREENVILLE, S.C. – After battling defending national champion and No. 1 SCAD in its season opener, the Spartanburg Methodist College women's soccer team returned to the pitch Monday afternoon to face local rival Bob Jones.
The Pioneers (0-1-1) outshot the host Bruins 11-9 as the teams played to a 0-0 draw. SMC generated six shots in the final 13 minutes, including a strike by freshman Valentina Garzon that hit the post in the 81st minute. Goalkeeper Ava Wilson recorded four saves to notch her first shutout of the season and the sixth of her career.
The Bruins (0-0-1) were led by Annabelle Gaddis, who tallied three shots, including chances in the 31st and 52nd minutes that were denied by Wilson. Bob Jones also saw three opportunities negated by offside calls.
The Pioneers return home for a quick turnaround, hosting Carolina (N.C.) on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Nash Soccer Field.
