Black Mountain, N.C. – Sam Aalbue scored twice to lead host Montreat to a 5-1 win over the Spartanburg Methodist College women's soccer team on Saturday afternoon.
The Pioneers (2-3-2, 0-2-1 AAC) were limited to just one shot in the first half but responded with eight in the second. One of those chances turned into a goal in the 68th minute when Valentina Garzon scored off a pass from Emmy Douglas.
The Cavaliers (2-3, 2-1 AAC) opened the scoring in the 25th minute on an unassisted strike from Aalbue, then doubled their lead in the 54th minute on a goal by Rosza Williford. After SMC cut the deficit to 2-1, Montreat answered with goals in the 70th, 75th, and 89th minutes to secure the final margin.
Pioneers goalkeeper Ava Wilson faced 19 shots and recorded six saves. Garzon, Kamari Johnson, and Delanie DeHoyos each registered two shots to pace SMC.
SMC will now play three of its next four matches at home, beginning Wednesday, Sept. 17, at 1 p.m. against Reinhardt at Nash Soccer Field.
