SMC Soccer Opens Season with Wins
SPARTANBURG, SC – The SMC Pioneers soccer teams both
opened their season Sunday with at-home wins over Andrew
College.
The SMC women's team got the afternoon underway with a 6-0
rout of Andrew.
Freshman Laura Weaver (Charleston, SC / West Ashley HS) posted the
first two goals of her college career, to lead the women's
team in scoring.
Additional goals were made by Emily Tucker (Fresh. / Campobello,
SC / Chapman HS), Jenna Thompson (Soph. / Belton, SC / Belton-
Honea Path HS), Candace Jones (Fresh. / Greenwood, SC / Ninety Six
HS), and Kayla Kight (Fresh. / Lexington, SC / White Knoll, SC)
On the men's side, freshman Sebastian Velasquez
(Greenville, SC / Eastside HS) posted both of SMC's points in
their 2-0 win.
The men's team next plays on the road Saturday at 1 pm against USC
Salkehatchie; the women's team plays on Wednesday at home at 4 pm
against USC Lancaster.
Spartanburg Methodist College has 14 intercollegiate teams that
compete in Region X of the National Junior College Athletic
Association, which includes colleges in the Carolinas, Virginia and
West Virginia.
The College is in its 100th academic year of providing quality
education to students in a Christian environment this August. More
than 90 percent of SMC graduates continue their education at other
institutions of higher learning.
