SMC Men’s Soccer Prepares for New Era in the Appalachian Athletic Conference with Expanded Roster and Development Program
SPARTANBURG, SC – The Spartanburg Methodist College men’s soccer program is set to kick off a new era in 2025 as it joins the highly competitive Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC). Entering their inaugural season in the league, the Pioneers will return 18 players from last year’s squad while adding 32 newcomers, including 19 freshmen, eight transfers, and two student-athletes from last season’s NAIA National Runner-Up team.
Head Coach Doug Smith is optimistic about the direction of the program.
“We’re excited to be part of such a strong conference,” said Smith. “We know every match will test us, but we’ve built a roster that’s ready for that challenge. This is the kind of environment that helps us grow.”
Key Returners Set the Foundation
The Pioneers will rely on several experienced returners as they navigate their new conference:
-
Ronnie Mendez (Jr., Midfielder – Rock Hill, SC) returns as a reliable central presence and leader in the midfield.
-
Francesco Molinar (Sr., Goalkeeper – Cali, Colombia) is a standout shot-stopper expected to contend for postseason honors.
-
Rodrigo Pinheiro (Sr., Centerback – Albufeira, Portugal) anchors the defense with his commanding 6’5” frame and physical dominance.
Talented Newcomers Add Firepower
Among the exciting freshmen:
-
Tomas Vega (Medellín, Colombia / Greer, SC) brings technical excellence and creative flair to the midfield.
-
Kevin Escorza (Greenville, SC) adds discipline and athleticism to the back line.
-
Jahmarli Connor (St. Kitts and Nevis) injects speed and international experience into the attack.
-
Anthoney Bedolla Menera and Yahir Rivera (both from Greenville, SC) round out a strong local core.
Eight transfers bring maturity and collegiate experience, including two players from the 2024 NAIA National Runner-Up squad—a major boost to the team’s depth and competitiveness.
“We’ve made a strong investment in our future,” Smith added. “This group of freshmen and transfers has the talent and character to build something sustainable and special.”
Key Games Highlight a Competitive Schedule
SMC will face a demanding schedule, featuring several marquee matchups:
-
August 21 vs. Northwestern (IA) – Season opener at home
-
August 24 vs. Johnson (TN) – First AAC match
-
August 30 at Mobile (AL) – Nationally ranked opponent, reached as high as No. 2 in 2024
-
September 10 at CIU (Columbia International) – Rematch of last year’s hard-fought 2-1 defeat
-
October 1 vs. Columbia College – Key AAC contest following last year’s 1-1 draw
Other notable AAC matchups include Pikeville, Milligan, Bluefield, Bryan, and Montreat.
New Development Team Joins Carolina Conference Development League
In addition to the first team, Spartanburg Methodist has launched a Development Team that will compete in the Carolina Conference Development League. This initiative will provide vital playing time for freshmen, transfers, and developing players.
“The Development Team lets us prepare our younger guys to step into the first team when the time is right,” said Smith. “It’s a pathway, not a bench.”
Expanded Staff and Clear Program Goals
Joining the staff is Assistant Coach Michaelangelo Dovidio, who brings a wealth of experience from the NCAA Division I level as both a player and coach.
“Coach Dovidio is the real deal,” Smith said. “He connects with the players, sees the game in layers, and holds everyone to a high standard.”
The program has identified three primary goals for the 2025 season:
-
Develop young players into first-team contributors through structured training and the development league.
-
Qualify for the AAC Conference Tournament in the team’s inaugural season.
-
Win either the AAC Regular Season or Tournament Title, laying the foundation for long-term success.
