Coming off a last-second win on Tuesday against Bryan College, the Spartanburg Methodist College men's basketball team put together one of its best performances of the season in an 84–66 victory over Brewton-Parker College on Saturday afternoon.
Spartanburg Methodist College (2–7) placed all five starters in double figures and forced 19 turnovers, converting them into 24 points.
Brewton-Parker (6–2), which opened the season with six straight wins, dropped its second consecutive game despite a 17-point effort from Tommy J. Tisdale III. He led the Barons, who also received 17 points from Jakobe Jones and 12 from Gil Gonzalez.
The Pioneers were paced by CJ Terrell's 22 points and eight rebounds. Musa Muriithi added 17, Kennedy Aiken-Shannon scored 15, Tavarez Lacey contributed 13, and Caleb Jenkins tallied 11. Continuing the spirit of sharing during Thanksgiving week, SMC moved the ball effectively, recording 17 assists on 26 made field goals. Jenkins and Lacey each handed out five assists, while reserve Kelton Teasley added four.
Five quick points from Tisdale gave the visitors a brief 5–2 lead with 17:53 left in the first half before Muriithi knocked down the first of his three 3-pointers to tie the game at 5–5. Later, Lacey found Teasley for a layup with 12:46 remaining to give SMC a 13–12 lead. A three-point play by Jenkins moments later put the Pioneers ahead for good. SMC extended its lead to as many as 20 on its way to the win.
In the second half, Terrell scored 18 of his 22 points, Lacey added 11 of his 13, and Aiken-Shannon recorded 10 of his 15 as the Pioneers shot 47.6% from the field. SMC secured the victory by knocking down 24 of its final 29 free throws.
Next, the Pioneers will host the University of Pikeville in an AAC matchup on Saturday, December 6, at 4 p.m. at Bridges Arena.
