SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Visiting Southeastern University spoiled the home opener for the Spartanburg Methodist College men's basketball team, earning a 77-61 victory Wednesday night.
Spartanburg Methodist (0-2) was led by CJ Terrell, who came off the bench to score 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field. Tavarez Lacey added 14 points in the loss.
Southeastern (2-0) was paced by a double-double from Nathan Mikkelson, who posted 19 points and 14 rebounds. He led three Fire players in double figures, joined by Jayson Nixon with 14, LaDavian King with 12, and Mylo Santos with 10.
After Kelton Teasley tied the game at 12 with a layup at the 14:39 mark of the first half, the Fire responded with five straight points to take the lead for good. Southeastern closed the half on an 8-4 run to extend its advantage to 39-30 at the break.
Musa Muriithi brought the Pioneers within six at 46-40 with 14:40 remaining, but a 9-2 surge by the Fire pushed the lead back to double digits and effectively sealed the outcome.
Next up, the Pioneers travel to Huntington, Indiana, to compete in the Ness Brothers Hall of Fame Classic, Nov. 7–8. SMC will face Florida Memorial on Friday, Nov. 7, at 8 p.m., before taking on host Huntington College on Saturday, Nov. 8, at 3 p.m.
