The Spartanburg Methodist College softball team swept a pair of opponents — Rochester Christian, 6–0, and Penn State Mont Alto, 14–0 — on Monday as part of its Spring Break trip at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
The Pioneers (14–2) overcame rainy conditions that delayed the start of action on Monday and came out swinging at the plate while also delivering stifling pitching performances.
In the first contest of the day, SMC jumped out to an early 3–0 lead in the first inning on its way to a 6–0 win over Rochester Christian. Alex Stuckey led the offense with three hits, while four Pioneers recorded multiple hits. Maddie Handy, Saleena Rollins, and Gracie Starnes each added two hits in the victory. Six different Pioneers recorded an RBI in the win.
What Handy did not do at the plate, she made up for in the circle. She improved her record to 5–0 with a three-hit shutout, striking out six batters in the victory.
Game two of the day saw SMC roll to a 14–0 win over Penn State Mont Alto. Five Pioneers recorded multiple hits, including Grace Thomas and Maddie Handy, who each had a team-best three hits in the win. Alex Stuckey added three more RBIs, while Thomas, Carson McCowan, and Jacie Ross each drove in two runs.
Pitchers Bailey Kiser and Kaylin Otey combined to limit Penn State Mont Alto to just four hits while striking out five batters.
