Kiser’s Near No-Hitter Leads Pioneers to Doubleheader Sweep of Union Commonwealth
UNION, KY - Led by a one-hitter in the circle from junior Bailey Kiser in game one, the Spartanburg Methodist College softball team swept a doubleheader against Union Commonwealth on Saturday. The visiting Pioneers claimed a 3–0 win in the opener and followed with a 6–2 victory in game two.
Spartanburg Methodist College (18-5, 3-3 AAC) capitalized early in game one, scoring a run in the second inning after a Bulldogs error. The Pioneers added two more runs in the fourth to account for the final margin. SMC managed just three hits offensively but took advantage of three Union errors in the win.
Kiser was dominant in the circle, holding the Bulldogs hitless through 6.2 innings. Her no-hit bid was broken up by Skylar Smith, who delivered a single after a six-pitch at-bat.
In game two, the SMC offense came alive with nine hits in the 6–2 win. Gracie Starnes and Jacie Ross each recorded two hits, while Josie Smythe drove in two runs to lead the Pioneers.
After a scoreless start, SMC broke through with four runs in the fourth inning to take control. Union answered with two runs in the fifth, but the Pioneers added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh to seal the victory.
In the circle, Maddie Handy earned the win, improving to 6-1 after pitching 4.2 innings. Kyla Quiles was strong in relief, allowing no hits over the final 2.1 innings.
SMC will return to action Wednesday, March 25, traveling to Waleska, Georgia for a doubleheader against Reinhardt. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
