SMC Women's Golfers Both Finish Nationals In Top 50
DAYTONA BEACH, FL -- The SMC women's golf team's first-ever trip to the NJCAA National Championship ended with both of its golfers finishing the event Thursday in the Top 50.
SMC freshmen Kaitlyn Prescott (Piedmont, SC / Wren HS) and Takima Butler both finished in a four-way tie at 42nd place in the117-player tournament.
Prescott shot a 91 (+19) in the final round of play, while Butler edged that with an 89 (+17). Both women posted a three-round total of 260.
" Both Kaitlyn and Takima have had a great season -- they've improved throughout and have been great representatives of SMC at every event in which they have competed. I'm looking forward to another great season with them on our team again next year - and we'll be shooting for another trip to nationals," says women's golf coach Kyle Owings.
As the only two members of SMC's women's golf team for the spring semester, Prescott and Butler represented SMC as individuals in the tournament hosted by Daytona State College at the LPGA International Legends Course in Daytona Beach.
"For these two young ladies to be able to qualify for nationals and compete aggressively with teams that have been there year after year, really says a great deal about their skills and the strength of our women's golf program. We're very proud of what Kaitlyn and Takima have accomplished this year," adds SMC athletic director Mark Perdue.
Spartanburg Methodist College has 14 intercollegiate teams that compete in Region X of the National Junior College Athletic Association, which includes colleges in the Carolinas, Virginia, and West Virginia. The College is in its 99th year of providing quality education to students in a Christian environment. More than 90 percent of SMC graduates continue their education at other institutions of higher learning.
