SMC Men's Golf Named AAC Men's Team of Character
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Spartanburg Methodist College men's golf team has been named the 2025-26 Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Men's Team of Character, the conference announced today.
The award, selected by a vote of the AAC athletic directors, recognizes the program that best exemplifies the NAIA Champions of Character core values of integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship, and servant leadership.
Throughout the academic year, the Pioneers made a lasting impact both on campus and throughout the Spartanburg community. The team volunteered weekly with the United We Play program in partnership with Spartanburg United, helping create a free, adaptive soccer experience for children and adults with learning and physical disabilities. Student-athletes also volunteered with the Carolina Miracle League, continuing the program's commitment to serving individuals of all abilities.
"This recognition means a great deal because it reflects who our players are when no one is keeping score," said head coach Kevin Cotrell. "We want to develop great golfers, but more importantly, we want to develop great people. Our players embraced opportunities to serve others, build relationships within our community, and represent Spartanburg Methodist College with humility and character. I'm incredibly proud of the way they invested their time and hearts into making a difference."
The Pioneers also demonstrated their commitment to excellence in the classroom. Four student-athletes earned Daktronics NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors, while nine members of the team were recognized on the AAC All-Academic Team.
"This award speaks to the culture our men's golf program has built under Coach Cotrell's leadership," said Spartanburg Methodist College Director of Athletics Megan Aiello. "Champions of Character isn't just something we talk about at Spartanburg Methodist College—it's something we strive to live every day. Watching this team serve our community, excel academically, and represent our institution with integrity makes this recognition especially meaningful. We are incredibly proud of these young men and the example they continue to set."
The Men's Team of Character Award caps another successful year for the Pioneer men's golf program, recognizing a team that excelled not only through competition but also through service, leadership, and a steadfast commitment to positively impacting those around them.
