SMC Selects Brookman as Mens Basketball Head Coach
SPARTANBURG, SC -- Spartanburg Methodist College has chosen Jeff
Brookman, a three-year assistant coach from Anderson University, to
take the reins as its newest head coach of the Pioneers'
men's basketball team.Jeff Brookman
"Jeff is the kind of person that we like to see at SMC -
energetic and experienced," SMC athletic director Mark Perdue
comments. "With his recruiting background in South
Carolina, he is the exact person SMC needs to continue the winning
traditions set forth by former coaches."
Brookman's hiring follows former head coach Rob Burke's
departure for The Citadel in May.
"The three main things I'm excited about are that SMC
is a great college; it has a great basketball program; and the
opportunity to become a head coach of such a strong program is
something I have been looking for," says Brookman.
In the 2009-2010 season at Anderson, Brookman helped lead the
program to a 24-8 record and to the NCAA Division II Southeast
Region Semi-Finals.
Brookman, 34, has nearly 10 years of coaching experience, on
multiple levels, including five additional years at the collegiate
level and one year as head coach in a European league.
Brookman takes over for a program that is returning 12 players and
has two signees for the 2010-2011 season. The Pioneers posted a
19-11 season in 2009-2010 and a third place finish in the Region X
tournament.
The Pioneers went 112-67 in the past six years, with 20 or more
games won in 2005-2006 and 2007-2008. The SMC program has also seen
a 94 percent graduation rate during that same time frame, including
five players who moved to Division I programs.
Spartanburg Methodist College has 14 intercollegiate teams that
compete in Region X of the National Junior College Athletic
Association, which includes colleges in the Carolinas, Virginia,
and West Virginia. The College is in its 99th year of providing
quality education to students in a Christian environment.
More than 90 percent of SMC graduates continue their education at
other institutions of higher learning.
