Pioneers Close Season With A Home Win Against Gaston College
The Pioneers won all sets against Gaston this past Tuesday. A 30-game season in SMC's first regular-season of beach volleyball is considered a success. With opponents ranging from DI to Junior College, the team had a wide variety of competition. Against small schools (NAIA/JUCO) the Pioneers had a record of 15-4.
Some highlights of the season included hosting a tournament with all divisions represented. For SMC’s future, it shows that we can schedule and play good volleyball. Another was competing in the first-ever AVCA Two Year Beach Championships. Beach volleyball will continue to grow in all divisions and it is special that SMC was able to be part of the inaugural event. The final highlight was beating St. John River State to place 3rd at the AVCA Championships. After losing to them in pool play the previous day and playing through a lightning delay, the team came out on top and it was a fun way to finish.
