Four Pioneers Qualify for Wrestling Nationals
SPARTANBURG, SC -- Four members of the Spartanburg Methodist
College wrestling team qualified Saturday on their home turf to
represent their squad at the National Junior College Athletics
Association's 2010 national tournament.
SMC qualified an all-freshmen field at the Eastern District
Tournament to send to nationals on Feb. 25-28 at Ellsworth
Community College in Iowa Falls, IA. Qualifying for nationals fro
SMC are:
- Chris Jones (Travelers Rest HS / Greenville, SC) finished in first place in the 133 weight class
- Andrew Tillman (Abbeville HS / Abbeville, SC) finished in third place in the 141 weight class
- Luke Campbell (Laurens HS / Enoree, SC) finished in fourth place in the 125 weight class
- Nick Voss (Buford HS / Buford, GA) finished in fifth place in the 149 weight class
The 2009 Pioneer wrestling squad finished 29th at the national
tournament.
"I am very excited for the guys we are taking to the National
tournament. Each of them deserve it. They have worked
very hard for this opportunity. I think all four have a good
chance to be All Americans. We now have to finish the job,"
says head coach Robbie Higdon.
Spartanburg Methodist College is in its 99th year of providing
quality education to students in a Christian environment.
More than 90 percent of SMC graduates continue their education at
other institutions of higher learning.
