Bio
Zach Smith was named the inaugural assistant men's volleyball coach at Spartanburg Methodist College in 2026, joining head coach Bryan Buckius to help launch the Pioneer men's volleyball program.
Smith arrived at SMC with four years of collegiate and club coaching experience following a successful playing career. Most recently, he served as an assistant coach at Governors State University (Ill.), where he helped guide the Jaguars to a runner-up finish in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) in 2026. During his tenure, Governors State received votes in the NAIA National Poll, while freshman Pablo Pascual earned CCAC Freshman of the Year honors and was one of three all-conference selections for the program.
In addition to his collegiate coaching experience, Smith spent several years with Windy City Premier Volleyball Club in suburban Chicago, coaching athletes across the U14-U18 levels. His responsibilities included player development, skill instruction, practice planning, recruiting support, and administrative operations. He also managed the club's website and social media platforms, helping expand the program's digital presence and community engagement.
As a student-athlete, Smith helped establish the men's volleyball program at Concordia University Wisconsin before continuing his playing career professionally with Green Volley Club in Rome, Italy. Competing in Italy's Serie C league, he gained valuable international playing experience that continues to shape his coaching philosophy.
Smith earned a bachelor's degree in Sport and Entertainment Business from Concordia University Wisconsin.
At Spartanburg Methodist College, Smith plays an integral role in all aspects of the men's volleyball program, including recruiting, player development, practice planning, scouting, and helping build the foundation for the Pioneers' inaugural season. Working alongside Buckius, he is committed to developing student-athletes who excel academically, compete at a high level, and represent the college with pride both on and off the court.
