Major Leauge Soccer bound! Velasquez selected 36th overall
Draft day at SMC is usually the norm when it comes to the baseball program and having players selected by professional teams, but yesterday was a little bit different. It wasn't Coach Wallace and crew sending off another player to play MLB but it was his old office where head coach Rich Weber and his soccer team stayed glued to ESPN 2 and the internet for the annual Major League Soccer draft hoping to hear a teammates name called.
The names of the schools that players were selected from were normal.. Duke, UNC, Creighton, etc.. that is until the 2nd round and the 36th pick came. The announcers had no idea where SMC was located. Since the pick belonged to Real Salt Lake, they assumed it was somewhere in Utah. Luckily they discovered it was here in Spartanburg, SC.
Sebastian Velasquez (35 goals- 16 assists in 2011) is at home in South America with his mother and preparing for the upcoming professional season. He only hoped to hear his name called and when he did it was all silence and smiles.
Weber stated that Sebastian was the only junior college player selected in the draft. No NCAA Division II, III or NAIA player was selected. Only NCAA D1 players and Spartanburg Methodist's own Sebastian Velasquez!
Congrats to Sebastian, Coach Weber and Coach Keneally!!!!
