Pioneers Tie No. 7 Georgia Perimeter
SMC Men Split for Weekend, Lose to Wake Tech
SPARTANBURG, SC- The No. 15 Pioneer men's soccer team split for the weekend, with a 1-1 tie at home against No. 7 Georgia Perimeter College on Saturday and a one-point loss to Wake Tech on Sunday.
The Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the first minute of a highly contested and physical game against Georgia Perimeter, on a goal by Christian Bono (Rock Hill HS) and an assist by Mateo Zapato (Mauldin HS).
SMC held on to the lead until late in the second half when David Alexander (Charlotte Christian) was called for a hand-ball in the box which gave the Jaguars a penalty kick and a 1-1 tie. The Pioneers scored a late goal, only to have it waved off by the referees due to an earlier foul.
The Pioneers and the Jaguars played to 1-1 draw.
The Pioneers' Sunday home game against Wake Tech showed the ill effects of Saturday's game with Georgia Perimeter.
SMC played with visible fatigue as Wake Tech scored late in the game to take a 1-0 region win from the Pioneers. The Pioneers failed to score on 17 shots on goal and dropped to 8-2-1 for the year and 6-2 in Region 10 play.
The Pioneers hope to rebound with a win and travel to Louisburg College, Wednesday, Oct. 6.
Spartanburg Methodist College has 14 intercollegiate teams that compete in Region X of the National Junior College Athletic Association, which includes colleges in the Carolinas, Virginia and West Virginia.
