SMC Diamond: Notes, News, And Season Week 12
SMC Update:
The Pioneers put together a 4-2 week, wrapping up the regular season with a record of 38-15 overall and 16-10 in Region X. They split their four-game Region X series last weekend at USC Salkehatchie. On Friday, SMC fell in the series opener with the Indians taking a 2-1 game, then bounced back to win game two, 6-0. On Saturday, they won a hard-fought 16-inning game, 3-2, before dropping the series finale 8-0.
On Tuesday, they completed the regular season schedule by travelling to Surry CC and earning a sweep, winning by scores of 3-1 and 8-1.
Who's hot:
1B Tyler Jackson hit the ball hard all week; he went 11 for 22 with four doubles and seven RBI, including the go-ahead run in the 16th on Saturday.
RHP Jake Long threw a three-hit shutout in a 6-0 win on Friday. He improved his record to 5-2, retiring the first eleven batters he faced, and striking out six with just one walk. The shutout was the first of his SMC career.
RHP Hunter Rice pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless relief in two outings and earned his fifth save of the season on Tuesday. He struck out four and walked one. RHP Justin Lykins pitched 3.2 innings of scoreless relief, striking out six and walking one. RHP Josh Wilson came up big in Saturday's win, throwing 3.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Rice, Lykins, and Wilson all worked out of bases-loaded jams in the 3-2, 16-inning win on Saturday. RHP Greg Harrison picked up the win in that one, working two scoreless innings.

College Alumni Update:
Marty Gantt, OF/1B/LHP, College of Charleston – Went 6 for 14 with one double, one home run, three RBI and six runs scored for the Cougars in a sweep of Furman. He also stole his team-leading 21st base.
Jake Koenig, SS, UNC Wilmington – Went 4 for 13 with 5 RBI in helping the Seahawks to a series win over Hofstra.
Rob Harding, IF/RHP, College of Charleston – Went 3 for 11 with a double and three RBI in helping the Cougars to a sweep of Furman.
Former Pioneers and current College of Charleston players Gantt, Harding, Kyle Owings, Robert Pritcher, Josh Salay, and Ross Hanna will be returning to Spartanburg this weekend for the Cougars' three-game series at Wofford.
Pro Alumni Update:
2B Orlando Hudson ('98) is hitting .234 for the San Diego Padres, and has 8 stolen bases in 8 attempts.
CF Travis Witherspoon ('09) He's hitting .250 with four doubles, three home runs, and nine RBI for Cedar Rapids (Angels). He is 13 for 15 in stolen base attempts.
RHP Heath Hembree ('09) picked up three saves last week for San Jose (Giants). For the season, he is 0-0, 1.29 with four saves. He has 13 strikeouts in seven innings pitched.
RHP David Walters ('07) picked up another save last week for Delmarva (Orioles). He has five on the season.
