SMC Diamond: Notes, News, And Season Week 11
SMC Update:
The Pioneers (34-13 overall, 14-8 in Region X) split their four-game Region X series with Guilford Tech last weekend, dropping the first two games on Saturday, 8-7 and 3-2, before bouncing back to win both Sunday games, 11-7 and 4-3.
Who's hot:
OF Cody Martin heated up on the weekend, going 5 for 10 with a pair of doubles, a home run and two RBI. IF/DH Luke Tollison started off the weekend with a bang, going 3 for 4 with a pair of homers in the series opener to tie him with CF Travis Burnside for the team lead in that category with seven. 1B Tyler Jackson saw little to hit, drawing five more walks in 16 total plate appearances to increase his team high total (33). He is reaching base at a team-best .449 clip.

College Alumni Update:
Steve Cochrane, 1B, Georgia Southern – Had a huge weekend, going 7 for 10 with four doubles and seven RBI in a series win over Western Carolina. The senior is putting up big numbers hitting in the middle of the order for the Eagles: .366 with 13 doubles, five home runs, and 44 RBI.
Taylor Black, SS, Kentucky – Went 7 for 15 with two doubles and four RBI as the Wildcats were swept by Ole Miss. Black is having a stellar senior season, hitting a team-best .348 with 12 doubles and 27 RBI. He is 10/13 in stolen base attempts.
Zach Godley, RHP, Tennessee – Pitched 2.2 innings against Alabama on Thursday, allowing three hits and no earned runs while striking out two. He has racked up 25 strikeouts in 22 innings so far this spring.
Pro Alumni Update:
2B Orlando Hudson ('98) is hitting .278 for the San Diego Padres, and is a perfect 6/6 in stolen base attempts.
CF Travis Witherspoon ('09) is off to a solid start for Class A Cedar Rapids (Angels). He's hitting .268 with two doubles, three home runs, and seven stolen bases in eight attempts.
RHP Heath Hembree ('09) picked up his first save of the season last Saturday for San Jose (Giants). For the season, he is 0-0, 2.25 with one save and six strikeouts in four innings pitched.
RHP David Walters ('07) earned two saves last week for Delmarva (Orioles). He has four on the season, and has limited opponents to a .192 batting average against in 6.1 innings.
