Pioneer comback falls short
Kierra Phillips and Ashia Mitchell did all they could to bring the Pioneers back from a 22 point deficit early in the second half but their attempt along with the rest of the Pioneer squad came up short.
Guilford Tech took a seven point lead into half time and came out of the locker room on fire. SMC was held to one free throw for the first six minutes of the second half and Guilford Tech pulled away.
The game looked to be over but Shanolla Council sparked the Pioneers off the bench with four quick points and a couple blocks. From their, Mitchell (16 points) and Phillips (13 points took over and carried SMC to within five points. Jenna White added a clutch three pointer out of a time out to make the score 54-49 with three minutes to go.
Guilford Tech protected the basketball and hit their free throws down the stretch as SMC rimmed out several three's and long range two pointers.
The Pioneers (1-3) look to rebound Thursday night against Emmanuel College on the road.
