Pioneers take down D1-Gardner Webb in a slug fest 13-12
In the 35 degree temps, wind blown snow and 25+ mph winds the Pioneers pounded out 13 hits against the Bulldogs of Gardner Webb. GWU is a NCAA D1 school that competes in the Big South Conference.
Lauren Eastwood belted a grand slam bomb to deep right field and also added three more hits on the day. Freshman Rebekah Smith added a three run shot to deep left and sophomore Leea Polin blistered a shot off the wall in center.
"For it to be as cold as it was today we sure hit the ball hard. We had a couple bloop hits but the majority of them were absolute shots." said head coach Thad Fox. "Gardner Webb has a very good program and Coach Cole is a very good coach and friend. I told him after the game that both programs got a lot better today. We learned that we can't sit on a lead no matter how large and they learned you are never out of a game."
SMC will return to action on Wednesday as they host NAIA member Southern Wesleyan University from Central, SC.
