Lady Pioneers Make Tournament Semi-Finals
SPARTANBURG -- The No. 2 seed SMC Lady Pioneers made it into the Region X tournament's semi-final round with two big wins Saturday after falling into the loser's bracket in their first game of the day.
The Lady Pioneers will take on Louisburg College at 10 am Sunday at Grant softball field at SMC - the team that sent them to the loser's bracket early Saturday afternoon with a close 5-4 loss.
The winner of that game will play No. 1 seed Pitt CC, who is undefeated in the tournament, in the 1 pm championship round. The Lady Pioneers went 3-1 in the regular season against both Louisburg and Pitt.
SMC ended its Saturday play with a 10-2 win over a hot USC Sumter.
Pitcher Bailey Smith (Crest HS / Shelby, NC) took the mound for the Lady Pioneers, limiting USC Sumter to four hits and two runs while the SMC offense continued to roll.
SMC picked up three runs in the first inning, five in the second, and two in the third with everyone getting into the hit parade.
Prior to that, the Lady Pioneers defeated Florence Darlington Tech 7-1.
SMC scored five runs in the third inning against Florence Darlington, by a KC Shue (Concord HS / Concord, NC) grand-slam. Ashira Dobison (Colleton County HS / Walterboro, SC) picked up the complete game win, with only five hits. Morgan Blanton and Brittany Phillips led SMC in hitting.
Spartanburg Methodist College has 14 intercollegiate teams that compete in Region X of the National Junior College Athletic Association, which includes colleges in the Carolinas, Virginia, and West Virginia.
The College is in its 100th academic year of providing a quality education to students in a Christian environment. More than 90 percent of SMC graduates continue their education at other institutions of higher learning.
