Lady Pioneers Open Up with Two Wins Against FDT
Spartanburg, SC- The Lady Pioneers hosted the Stingers of Florence Darlington Tech and won 3- out-of-4.
In game one Friday, Bailey Smith (Crest HS, NC) threw six no hit innings before allowing two runs on three hits in the 7th inning to record the 4-0 win. Ali Ruppe (East Rutherford HS, NC) came on to retire the next three batters to pick up the save.
SMC scored four runs in the 3rd inning after consecutive hits from Jena Westmoreland (Mauldin HS), Morgan Cox (Hillcrest HS), Brittany Phillips (Broome HS), Casey Shue (Concord HS, NC), Lauren Eastwood (Hanahan HS) and a squeeze bunt by Bailey Smith.
In game two, the Stingers jumped out to a two run lead in the top of the first on starter Caroline Pastre (Stratford HS). Pastre allowed two hits and hit two batters. She allowed a total of five hits in the game with five strikeouts.
The Pioneers scored two in the second inning and third innings; one run in the fourth and fifth innings. Morgan Cox, Jennifer Jones (Woodruff HS), and Kelsey Pruitt (South Florence HS) added two hits each. Emily Kirby (White Knoll, HS) added a homerun to deep left in the fourth inning as the Lady Pioneers rallied to win 6-2.
The Lady Pioneers improved to 6-4 in Region 10 and 14-13 overall.
Spartanburg Methodist College has 14 intercollegiate teams that compete in Region X of the National Junior College Athletic Association, which includes colleges in the Carolinas, Virginia, and West Virginia.
The College is in its 100th academic year of providing a quality education to students in a Christian environment. More than 90 percent of SMC graduates continue their education at other institutions of higher learning.
