Pioneers Net Double OT Win Over Aiken Tech
Spartanburg, SC - Mario Pendarvis (Summerville HS) hit a top of the key three-point basket with 11.4 seconds to go in the game as the Pioneers completed a second half comeback to win Wednesday in double overtime, 77-71, over Aiken Tech.
The Pioneers trailed by 12 points at the 10 minute mark and looked to be doomed as Aiken Tech methodically scored on almost every possession. The lead was cut to four points with 5 minutes to play as the Pioneers defensive intensity increased forcing Aiken Tech into bad shots and turnovers.
With 1:30 left on the clock DJ Brown (Wren HS) hit a three point basket to give the Pioneers a boost of momentum.
Pendarvis hit a long three pointer to tie game at 62-62 as the game went into overtime.
During the first overtime the teams changed leads several times and the Pioneers had a last second play at 2.8 seconds but the shot by Pendarvis hit the side of the board to send the game into a second overtime, 66-66.
In the second overtime the Pioneers took the lead at 69-68 and never gave it back. DJ Glover (Calhoun County HS) hit a three pointer to make the score 72-68 as the Pioneers played stiffling defense and hit some key shots to win, 77-71.
Pendarvis finished with 21 points as the Pioneers(17-6, 4-3 Region X) celebrated their second strainght overtime win.
The Pioneers start a four game road stretch as they travel to USC Salkehatchie, February 14.
Spartanburg Methodist College has 14 intercollegiate teams that compete in Region X of the National Junior College Athletic Association, which includes colleges in the Carolinas, Virginia, and West Virginia.
