Pioneers Win In Overtime
Spartanburg, SC- After a slow start and falling down 22-10 early in the first half the Pioneers fought back and took a 31-26 halftime lead against the Brunswick Dolphins on Sunday.
The Pioneers led most of the second half as Brunswick regained the lead 55-53 with 1:21 to play. DJ Glover (Calhoun County HS) tied the game at 57-57 with a driving layup.
Brunswick's shot with 3 seconds remaining missed the mark and SMC rebounded with 2.2 seconds and called time out to set up a least second shot. The Pioneers threw the ball the length of the court as Brunswick deflected the ball to send game to overtime.
Both teams battled in overtime as the lead changed hands several times. Michael Lowe Greenwood HS) hit two free-throws with 8.6 seconds left in overtime to seal the victory for the Pioneers, 68-65, as a last second shot from Brunswick fell short.
The Pioneers (16-6, 3-3 Region X) were lead by Mario Pendarvis' (Summerville HS) 15 points and DJ Glover (Calhoun County HS) 12 points.
The Pioneers return to action Wednesday as they host Aiken Tech at 7 pm.
Spartanburg Methodist College has 14 intercollegiate teams that compete in Region X of the National Junior College Athletic Association, which includes colleges in the Carolinas, Virginia, and West Virginia.
The College is in its 100th academic year of providing a quality education to students in a Christian environment. More than 90 percent of SMC graduates continue their education at other institutions of higher learning.
