Lady Pioneers hold on for win over Waverly

Spartanburg, SC- With time winding down in regulation and the Pioneers clinging to a seven point lead, DJ Brown (Wren HS) scored his lone basket, a deep three pointer, at the 1:15 mark to lift the SMC Pioneers to a 65-58 win over the Division II No. 8 Titans of Guilford Tech Wednesday night at Bridges Arena.

Brown struggled from the field the entire game but hit the clutch three pointer to finish with three points.

"I told him to be ready to shoot the entire game, knowing he was going to get the opportunity late," said Pioneer coach Jeff Brookman.

CJ Gleaton (Pendleton HS) led the Pioneers in scoring with 16 as the Pioneers improved to 11-3 on the season heading into a long Christmas break.

The Lady Pioneers earlier in the evening hosted the Waverly Falcons, a traveling team from Melbourne, Australia.

The Pioneers were gracious hosts by allowing the Falcons to tie the game late at 51-51 but hung on to win 76-72 and improve to 6-7.

Ashia Mitchell (Dorman HS) led the Lady Pioneers with 18 and Teqa McNeal (Dreher HS) chipped in 16.

Deandra Wright (Goose Creek HS) hit a 3 pointer with 4 seconds remaining in regulation to seal the victory for the Lady Pioneers.

The Pioneers men's team is on the road Saturday, Dec. 18 against Rockingham CC in their final game before Christmas break.

The Lady Pioneers return to the court Jan. 6 at home verses Roane State; the men will return to action Jan. 12 at home against Erskine JV.

Spartanburg Methodist College has 14 intercollegiate teams that compete in Region X of the National Junior College Athletic Association, which includes colleges in the Carolinas, Virginia, and West Virginia.

The College is in its 100th academic year of providing a quality education to students in a Christian environment. More than 90 percent of SMC graduates continue their education at other institutions of higher learning.
