Cowley County XC Teams Both Claim National Titles

SPARTANBURG, SC -- Cowley County (Kansas) Community College’s cross country teams went home from the National Junior College Athletic Association’s Division I cross country championships on Saturday with national titles.

Both the Cowley County men’s and women’s teams finished in first place in the event, hosted by Spartanburg Methodist College at the Milliken Research Park.

“From day one, these teams set out with the goal to win national titles. We made a pact on day one, put everything on the line, gave up partying, did extra runs – anything we could do extra, we did. We put the miles in. We had ups and downs throughout the season, but we pulled it off,” Vince DeGrado, head coach of the Cowley County men’s and women’s team, comments.

He adds, “To do this, together … I’m at a loss for words. It goes to show dedication. I told both teams the performance goal is first. Our outcome goal is to win, but I was like, you have to work as a team and put it all on the line. We were ranked No. 1 in the nation on both sides, unanimously, but rankings are just paper. It means nothing.  We thought we were overrated and we had the mindset that we were. We said every day, every week we come in here and we have to prove that we’re No. 1. And today it was let’s prove that we’re No. 1 again and we came out here and did it. I’m just speechless.”

The top three men’s team were rounded out by Central Arizona Community College, at second place, and South Plains Community College, at third place.

On the women’s side South Plains Community College came in second and Lansing Community College finished third.

Henry Leilei, from Central Arizona Community College set a new course 8K record for collegiate men, finishing in first place with a time of 23:39.

Florence Ngetich, from El Paso Community College ran a 17:16 in the women’s 5K to finish first.

“This was a great event – the weather was perfect and the runners all ran a great meet. We had a new course record set and saw some awesome competition. All the runners and coaches were great sportsmen and represented their schools well. They should all be proud of what they’ve accomplished this year. And we were glad to show off some southern hospitality to them while they were here. We hope they enjoyed coming to Spartanburg and the course at Milliken,” says Spartanburg Methodist College athletic director Mark Perdue.
