The 2011-2012 season will be Mike Foley's sixth as head coach of the Men's and Women's Cross Country teams at SMC.
Under Foley's guidance, the men's and women's teams have won 10 Region X team titles. Each of those five years, SMC runners have won men's and women's NJCAA Region X Runner of the Year awards. Foley was named NJCAA Region X Coach of the Year for both men and women each year between 2006-10.
The men have qualified for the NCAA National Cross Country Championship five years in a row and finished in the Top 20 each time. The women have qualified for the NCAA National Cross Country Championship four years in a row and finished in the Top 20 each time. SMC has also fielded teams at the NJCAA National Half Marathon Championship each of the last five years under Foley with a best finish of 3rd for the women's team in 2007 and fourth in 2010.
Student-athletes have earned more than 50 athletic and academic All-American honors during Foley's tenure, including 13 All American awards in 2010-11 alone. In addition, the men were an NJCAA Academic All American team in 2008 and 2010 and the women earned the NJCAA Academic All American team award in 2007 and again in 2010 when the women were ranked No. 2 in the nation with a 3.92 GPA.
Foley coached Spartanburg Methodist College's only individual NJCAA national champion in any sport when Becca Prichard of Clemson, S.C., won the 2007 NJCAA Half Marathon National Championship.
He is married to Robin Tarpinian, a high school English teacher at Blue Ridge High School and the track and cross country coach at Blue Ridge High Schools. He is also a health and sports writer for The Greenville News.
