Volleyball season comes to an end in Alabama Region Tourney
After missing the post season last year, the Lady Pioneers were happy to travel back to Alabama to keep the dream alive for a trip back to the National Championship tourney. SMC is the only NJCAA division 1 volleyball team in North or South Carolina and by NJCAA by-laws the Pioneers were sent to the ACCC to compete for a opportunity to earn a trip into the National tournament.
Seeded third, the Pioneers opened with six seed Wallace State-Selma CC. After a convincing 25-17 first set, the Pioneers dropped set 2 by a score of 20-25. SMC regrouped and won two straight sets 25-18 and 25-23 to seed WSSCC into the loser bracket.
By winning their first round match, the Pioneers advanced to play the #2 seed and host Gadsden State CC. Gadsden proved to be to tough for the Pioneers on their home floor and quickly dispatched SMC in three sets- (23-25, 21-25, and 20-25).
With the loss in the second round the Pioneers were sent to the losers bracket and were pitted against Faulkner CC. Needing a win to remain alive in the tourney, the Pioneers fought hard and played well but went down in four sets 3-1. (26-28, 25-23, 19-25, and 23-25).
The Pioneers end their season with a 15-16 overall record.
