5th Annual Pioneer Classic
The Pioneer Volleyball team will hosted its 5th annual Pioneer Classic this past Saturday and Sunday. The event took place at the Spartanburg Day School due to construction on the campus of Spartanburg Methodist College.
The host Pioneers took on the 21st ranked Wallace State CC volleyball team out of Alabama in the opening match at 9:00am. SMC quickly jumped out to a 10-0 lead behind the play of Abby Lowder. Wallace State reorganized and then went on their own run to win 22-25. "We started off well against Wallace State but lost focus deep in the match and Wallace State took advantage of our mistakes and made us pay''. said Head Coach Susie Williams
The 21st ranked visitors from Alabama didn't wait long to take care of games two and three by scores of 25-14 and 25-11. "Mistakes killed us today against WSCC. You cannot do that against top ranked clubs and have a chance to compete".
The Pioneers (1-2) fell to Brevard CC in the third match of the Pioneer Classic 25-17,13-25,10-25,23-25.
Day two proved to be a better overall performance for the Pioneers. SMC dominated Lacakawanna College out of Pennsylvania in their first match (25-13,25-8, and 25-12). Pitt CC was up next and proved to be a little too much for the Pioneers taking the match (16-25, 14-25, 18-25).
SMC (2-4) drew the #4 seed out of bracket play and got a rematch with Wallace State CC. Wallace St easily took the first set 12-25 but the Pioneers responded and played much better in the final two sets. (22-25 and 24-26).
