Marcus Sarstrand is in his first year as head coach the SMC men’s and women’s tennis teams.

Sarstrand, 32, is also a teaching professional at the Westside Club of Spartanburg and a member of the United States Tennis Association since 2008. He previously taught at the Spartanburg Athletic Club.

He competed from 1998 to 2009 as a member of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), and, from 2000 to 2007, was ranked between No. 240 and No.340.

Sarstrand’s prior coaching experience includes two years with the Ullevi Tennis Club, in Gothenbeug, Sweden, where, from 2007 to 2008 he coached elite players including Bjorn Rehquvist, No. 175 in the ATP.

Sarstrand has been a member of several European teams, including the French First Division Tennis Team (2005 – 2009), the German Bundesliga (1998 – 2009), and the Swedish National Junior Team (1991 – 1996).

He is a winner of seven Futures titles and competed in both the 1996 junior French Open and junior Wimbledon.

His best wins include a 2004 defeat of No. 89 (ATP) Alex Corretja, in Long Island, NY; Gilles Muller (No. 87 ATP), in Istanbul, Tukey, in 2004; Kristian Pless (No. 66), in Wroclaw, Poland, in 2002; Roger Federer (No. 57 ATP) in the 1998 Stockholm Open; and Thomas Johansson (No. 32 ATP) in the 1998 Swedish Open.

Sarstrand and his wife live in Spartanburg.
