JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida head basketball coach Matthew Driscoll announced the signing of junior college product Jalen Nesbitt to a national letter-of-intent to play for the Ospreys beginning in 2013-14 season.
A 6-4 guard from Inman, S.C., Nesbitt was a standout performer at Spartanburg Methodist College helping the Pioneers to a 35-1 record and a consolation game victory at the NJCAA DI Championship.
"Jalen is a young man that has an understanding about life, academics, and athletics that is refreshing and engaging," said Driscoll. "He not only scored and shot it well from the field, but also averaged 7.4 rebounds per game and had an almost 2-to-1 assist to turnover ratio. In addition, he's a tremendous defender having earned the league's Defensive Player of the Year honor. In his career, Spartanburg Methodist went 64-8 showing that he possesses that winning toughness necessary at this level."
Nesbitt earned first team All-Region X accolades this season after being named to the second-team as a freshman at SMC. He averaged 14 points, 7.4 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.5 steals per game this year. A versatile performer, Nesbitt shot 53.8 percent from the floor and 40.9 percent from long distance while also connecting at a 75.0 percent clip at the foul line. He posted 10 double-doubles including a 28-point/16-rebound effort against Vincennes in the consolation game at the NJCAA Division I National Tournament.
Nesbitt becomes the Ospreys first addition during the NCAA spring signing period. He joins UNF's trio of previously announced early signees – Sean Brennan, Romelo Banks and Dallas Moore – as a part of a key recruiting class, which looks to replace one of the program's most highly successful and decorated classes.
