Kurt Owings Named SMC Men’s Golf Coach

SPARTANBURG, SC- Dorman High School and Anderson University graduate Kurt Owings has been named the head men’s golf coach at Spartanburg Methodist College. Kurt Owings

Owings takes over the position from athletic director Mark Perdue, who had served in both positions since 2007 before stepping down earlier this spring to concentrate more on Athletic Department duties and fundraising.

Owings played on the Anderson University men’s golf team for four years, and locally at Dorman High School.  He had been assisting with the Pioneer golf team since 2008. 

“Kurt is going to do a great job with the program. We have a great group of sophomores returning to help with any transition,” says Perdue.

SMC has four sophomores returning, Kyle Peters, Drayton Melton, Cole and Wells Pierce, along with six news signees for the fall.

“I am excited to have the opportunity to be a head coach at SMC and promise to keep up the winning tradition,” states Owings.

Spartanburg Methodist College has 14 intercollegiate teams that compete in Region X of the National Junior College Athletic Association, which includes colleges in the Carolinas, Virginia, and West Virginia. The College is in its 99th year of providing quality education to students in a Christian environment.  More than 90 percent of SMC graduates continue their education at other institutions of higher learning.
