About SMC Pioneers Athletics
Spartanburg Methodist College enjoys a long history of
athletic excellence by producing many athletes who have attained
professional status in their sport. In fact, more than 100 SMC
baseball players have played some form of professional baseball.
Among the more famous SMC baseball alumni are Reggie Sanders, with
the St. Louis Cardinals; Mookie Wilson, who played with the 1986
World Champion New York Mets; Dwight Smith, who played with the
1995 World Champion Atlanta Braves; and four-time Gold Glove winner
Orlando Hudson, who currently plays for the Minnesota Twins.
Other SMC alumni have reached the professional ranks in golf,
basketball and soccer.
Our competitive attitude is apparent in all of our sports
programs.
Our baseball program is traditionally ranked as one of the best
two-year college programs in the nation and has participated in the
National Junior College baseball championships in Grand Junction,
Colorado numerous times. SMC's men's soccer program has held the
improbable title of NJCAA National Champions in 1994 by defeating a
junior college with an enrollment of more than 10,000. The program
has been nationally ranked on many occasions as it was this past
season. The men's and women's soccer programs together have
held the titles of South District Champions, Carolina District
Champions and Region 10 Champions. Our men's basketball team has
been ranked in the top five nationally six times and finished the
season as the sixth team in the nation in 1993 and last traveled to
NJCAA national tournament in 1999.
Several other SMC teams have put forth strong showings at their
respective national tournaments in recent years, including
softball, men's and women's tennis, wrestling, men's and women's
cross country, and volleyball -- all of which consistenly prove to
be competitive among the top ranked teams in the nation.
We also have a professional athletic trainer on staff, a
well-equipped training room, and a student trainer staff large
enough to handle all training responsibilities.
Don't wait until your junior or senior year of college to compete
at the college level. At SMC, you'll be a valuable part of the team
from the first day you suit up. Experience life as a college
athlete, not as a spectator waiting your turn
